Starbucks Canada Announces a Commitment to Rescue 100 Per Cent of Food Available for Donation

Starbucks is partnering with Second Harvest to roll out a food donation program to provide ready-to-eat, nourishing meals to those in need starting in Ontario. Once active in all 1,100 company-owned stores in Canada, Starbucks is expected to donate more than 1.5 million meals annually to those in need.This win-win program will help combat hunger and minimize food waste.

Second Harvest and Value Chain Management International release The Avoidable Crisis of Food Waste Report

(Toronto – January 17, 2019) Nearly 60 percent of food produced in Canada – amounting to 35.5 million metric tonnes – is lost and wasted annually. Of that, 32 percent – equalling 11.2 million metric tonnes of lost food – is avoidable and is edible food that could be redirected to support people in our communities. The total financial value of this potentially rescuable lost and wasted food is a staggering $49.46 billion. These unprecedented findings are the result of a year-long research project undertaken by Second Harvest, Canada’s largest food rescue organization, and Value Chain Management International, a leading public and industry voice in the area of food waste.

Second Harvest Announces the Appointment of CEO, Lori Nikkel

Canada’s Largest Food Rescue Organization, Second Harvest announced today that the Board of Directors has approved the appointment of Lori Nikkel as Chief Executive Officer, effective July 2, 2018. Lori succeeds Debra Lawson who announced her desire to retire earlier this year following a successful five-year tenure as Executive Director.

Toronto Taste Raises Funds to Provide 1.9M Meals

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, Toronto's landmark culinary event, Toronto Taste, raised enough funds to provide over 1.9 million meals for those experiencing food insecurity in the city. The proceeds help Second Harvest, Canada's largest food rescue charity, rescue and deliver fresh food to 253 social service agency partners.
