For the Love of Food Challenge
April 6th, 2018
Did you know that $31 billion worth of food is wasted in Canada each year?
As Canada’s largest rescue organization, we at Second Harvest are committed to the reduction of food waste and to ensuring that surplus food goes to people in need. Since 1985, we have rescued and delivered more than 127 million pounds of food, preventing over 70 million pounds of greenhouse gas equivalents from entering our atmosphere.
The food we rescue and deliver is primarily perishable: fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, juice, milk and healthy protein. Everything we deliver is perfectly good food that has been donated because it is close to expiry and likely won’t sell, overstock, mislabeled, discounted or has damaged packaging.
As we get ready to celebrate Earth Day, we are excited to launch The For the Love of Food Challenge, which is made possible with the exclusive support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario. Together, we want to inspire Torontonians to reduce their household food waste and become food rescue champions in their home and community.
Take our online pledge and commit to reduce your household food waste by 50% for one month, starting on Earth Day on April 22. We will provide you with all the tools you need to take action and learn more about how you will make a positive impact on the environment.
You will also have a chance share your results and be eligible to win some great prizes!
