What is Squash Hunger?

Formerly known as Turkey Drive, this is Second Harvest’s largest holiday food raising campaign! With our presenting sponsor, Loblaw Companies Limited, Second Harvest is asking for your help to reach our goal of distributing over 13,000 turkeys, holiday hams or plant-based alternatives to our frontline agency partners, who will use the food to feed people facing hunger this holiday season. 

Who Does Squash Hunger Benefit?

The food you help us provide will support approximately 170 agencies across the GTA who serve a wide variety of individuals, families, seniors and youth. With a 39% increase in food insecurity during the pandemic, our member agencies continue to see an increased need for their services.  Jean Tweed Centre, Etobicoke   Your support will help agencies like the St. Felix Centre meet that need:


Here’s how you can help – online or in person:

1. Participate online! 

In just a few clicks you can make a big difference in the lives of people struggling to access food this holiday season. From now until December 31st, you can donate online to help provide holiday protein or sign up to start your own holiday food-raising team!



2. Shop at a participating Loblaw Store near you: 

On two weekends in December, Second Harvest volunteers will be in participating GTA stores helping customers like you purchase a turkey, holiday ham or non-meat alternative to be delivered directly to our agency partners.

3. Be a Squash Hunger volunteer 

Interested in volunteering? We are looking for energetic groups of 4-6 to volunteer in store at the participating Loblaw locations listed above. Volunteer shifts are filling up! Reach out to the Volunteer Program Team at volunteer@secondharvest.ca to learn more. Please note that COVID-19 vaccine policies and social distancing guidelines will be in effect for all in-person Second Harvest volunteer opportunities. 

4. Corporate & cash donations 

Whether you are making a corporate gift or donating funds for us to purchase holiday protein on behalf of your employees, cash donations raised during the campaign will be used to support Second Harvest's mission to feed more people facing hunger. This includes transporting and delivering all holiday proteins collected for our agency partners.
