Turkey Drive – December 1-2 & 8-9, 2018

Volunteers are stationed at Loblaws locations across Toronto to ask customers to purchase a turkey and donate it to Second Harvest. Warehouse Food Sort

Please note that we are fully booked for the remainder of the year, now accepting request for January 2019.

Food sorts are a great way for employees to learn about teamwork and the importance of community involvement and gain further knowledge about Second Harvest’s food recovery programs. We are currently delivering enough food for over 30,000 meals every day. Often, the food donations arrive in large bins which need to be sorted into smaller boxes for our recipient agencies. We need volunteers in our warehouse to help sort that food.

Food Sort Opportunities are reserved for corporations who are Charitable Partners of Second Harvest. Charitable Partner status: support through a minimum contribution of $500.00 or $1000.00 of gift in kind/service value within the last calendar year. School and community groups are welcome to participate in Food Sorts.

Shifts: Monday-Thursday 9:30am – 11:30am or 1:30pm – 3:30pm; Friday 9:30am-11:30am

Requirements: Maximum of 10 people per shift, 16+ years of age.  Food sorts must be booked 2-3 weeks in advance.

Please Note: If you would like to request a Food Sort, please click here to download the package.  Complete the request form in your package and email to Marjorie Richards or fax it to 416-408-2598.

Truck Ride-Along

Throughout the year, by appointment

Join one of our drivers on the road for a day, picking up and delivering donations of fresh and frozen food. This is a great independent opportunity for your employees to see who we are and what we do. We can accommodate one volunteer per truck and can take a maximum of 5 volunteers per day.

Shifts: Monday-Friday 7:45am – approximately 3:00pm.
Requirements: Volunteers must book in advance.

Feeding Our Future – July & August 2019

Spend a weekday during the summer to help make hundreds of delicious and lunches for children attending city camps.  Second Harvest delivers to about a dozen community centres in Toronto thus ensuring children who get subsidized lunches during the school year will also be receiving at least one nutritious meal a day during the summer. Groups of 10 volunteers are needed per shift.

Shift: Mondays 7:00am-9:30am
Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

Location: Kitchen 24 – 100 Marmora St #200, North York, ON M9M 2X5

Food Collections

Throughout the year, approximately 3-4 collections

One of the ways in which Second Harvest receives food is through expos and trade shows. We need volunteers to canvass the show floor handing out flyers to the vendors and encourage surplus food donations. Volunteers can also expect to assist with sorting, packaging and loading food onto our truck so it can be transported back to our warehouse for redistribution.

Requirements: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

Toronto Taste – June 9, 2019

Our biggest fundraiser of the year, Toronto Taste is also the city’s premier culinary event with more than 60 chefs and 30 beverage purveyors serving all-you-can-eat tastes to 1,500 guests. It requires more than 400 volunteers for event setup, site tear down, auction assistance, catering assistance, chef registration, pre-event support, and more.

Toronto Taste provides a great team building experience that can easily accommodate large groups.  Volunteers are vital to the success of Toronto Taste which helps us to provide over 1 million meals for hungry seniors, adults and children.

Hero Days – October 2019

Every year, Second Harvest volunteers gather in various TTC and PATH locations across the city to support the Second Harvest Hero Campaign.  Shifts are short and easy to complete before or after work, even during lunch!  Volunteer tasks include spreading enthusiasm for food rescue, generating awareness about Second Harvest and collecting funds from commuters.

Impact? For every $5 raised, 10 healthy meals are provided to people experiencing hunger right here in our city.

Requirements: Volunteers under the age of 15 must have an adult present during their shift.
